Student Life
Our philosophy is built around the belief that young people flourish when they feel connected and valued, and everything we do outside of academics is designed with that in mind. St. John’s gives every student a role to play in the life of their school with opportunities for involvement including peer support networks, student-run enterprises, school-wide competitions, and student government.
Comfort Crew
The Comfort Crew is SJASL’s peer support program, a group of student volunteers who are there for their fellow Seawolves during the school day. If a classmate is navigating the transition to a new school, feeling overwhelmed, or simply needs a friendly face, Comfort Crew members offer an important point of connection. Being part of the Comfort Crew is also a meaningful leadership experience that builds empathy, communication skills, and a deep sense of responsibility for the wellbeing of the community around you.
The Seawolf Shack
The Seawolf Shack is SJASL’s snack shop. Managed and operated by students, the Shack gives our Seawolves hands-on experience in entrepreneurship, budgeting, and customer service. Proceeds from the Seawolf Shack go directly toward student-led fundraising initiatives, making every purchase a small act of community investment.
Student Council
Every student’s voice matters at SJASL. Every grade has representation, either through our Junior Student Council (grades 4–8), Student Council (grades 9–12), or Grade Council, and an opportunity to shape the life of their school. Students learn how to campaign, how to vote, and how to advocate for the people they represent, building civic skills and fostering leadership.
The House System
Every student who joins SJASL is welcomed into one of our four Houses: Gribbell, Tzouhalem, Arbutus, or Delta. From that moment, they become part of a tradition built on friendly competition, shared pride, and meaningful connections across grade levels.
Our House system brings together students from every grade and background to work toward common goals, fostering school spirit, teamwork, and a strong sense of community. Through Spirit Days and Inter-House competitions, students have opportunities to connect with peers they might not otherwise meet, celebrate their House identity, and contribute to the wider SJASL community.
The House system also provides valuable opportunities for student leadership. Our elected student House leaders take the lead in organizing and running Spirit Days and Inter-House competitions, developing their leadership skills while helping create an engaging, inclusive, and spirited school environment.
