Athletics
Sport at SJASL is where the Seawolf spirit is born, forged in effort, teamwork, and the pride of competing as one. Our athletics program is built around the belief that physical activity, team belonging, and the discipline of training are just as important to a young person’s development as anything that happens in the classroom. There is a place for every student in the pack and a community of teammates ready to welcome them in, whether they are stepping onto a court for the first time or arriving as a seasoned competitor.
Competitive School Teams
Students in our Middle and Senior Years have the opportunity to try out for and compete on SJASL competitive school teams, representing the Seawolves against other schools across Vancouver Island and beyond. Our athletes show up with integrity, support their teammates unconditionally, and carry the values of our community everywhere they go. Current competitive teams include volleyball, basketball, and cross country, with additional team sports offered throughout the year.
Jamborees and Foundations
For students in Grades 4 through 7, athletics at St. John’s Academy begins with the joy of movement and the pleasure of playing together. Junior Years students take part in sports jamborees, fun, inclusive multi-school events that introduce students to a range of sports in a supportive and celebratory environment. Students explore soccer, basketball, badminton, cross country, and track and field. Physical education is a cornerstone of every Junior student’s week, and the skills and enthusiasm built in these early years form a valuable foundation.
Water Sports and Skills
Students learn to swim, paddle, and navigate Shawnigan Lake with confidence and care, building the water safety skills, physical literacy, and deep connection to the natural environment that come from learning on the water itself. Paddle Boarding and canoeing or kayaking are a key part of school life, and we aim to give students time on the lake during every season. For those who prefer a quieter relationship with the water, fishing teaches patience, observation, and an understanding of our ecosystem.
Athletics Across the Curriculum
Through our co-curricular program and physical education classes, students across all grades are introduced to a broad range of sports and physical pursuits including soccer, volleyball, basketball, golf, track and field, paddle boarding, and hiking to the summit of Mount Baldy. Senior students also have the opportunity to take Active Living as a BC-credited course, exploring health, fitness, and physical literacy with the same academic rigour we bring to every subject.
The Seawolf Way
Athletics at St. John’s Academy has always been shaped by who we are as a community. Our teams are small enough that every athlete is known and plays an important part on the team. Our athletes have strong values and demonstrate excellent sportsmanship, understanding that how we play is just as important as whether or not we win. Our Seawolves compete hard and cheer loudly for each other!
