Learning in Nature

Experiential Education

At St. John’s Academy, the natural world is both a backdrop to learning and a core part of the curriculum itself. Nestled between the forests of Mount Baldy and the waters of Shawnigan Lake, our campus sits within one of the most ecologically rich and beautiful settings on Vancouver Island, and we use every square metre of it with intention. Environmental education at St. John’s is deeply ingrained in daily school life through inquiry-based lessons, hands-on projects, interdisciplinary learning, and a deep institutional commitment to environmental stewardship, conservation, and care for the land.

ECO Camp

Our ECO Camp (Environmental focus, Community building, Outdoor learning) is a two-day, one-night trip that aims to bring our school community together, strengthen our school culture, develop team working skills, and foster a love of nature. A main goal of the camp is to strengthen our school connections by including all members of our school, from our facilities team to our office staff, to participate in fun challenges, games, and outdoor activities. All parts of our team are valuable at St. John’s Academy and we want our students to develop appreciation and care for all members of our community.

EcoSchools Canada

St. John’s is proud to participate in the EcoSchools Canada certification program, a nationally recognized framework that encourages students and staff to develop genuine environmental literacy and a mindful approach to sustainability. Throughout the year, students undertake projects that reduce our environmental footprint, build partnerships within our local community, and deepen our collective understanding of climate change and ecological responsibility.

Earth Week

While many schools mark Earth Day, at St. John’s we dedicate three full days to it every April. During Earth Week, students across all grades design and carry out their own service projects focused on sustainability, climate action, and environmental awareness. Projects have ranged from tree planting and invasive species removal to art installations, community workshops, and conservation campaigns. It is one of the highlights of the school year, a week where student-led action makes an environmental impact.

Learning with Local Experts

Our students are regular visitors to the ecosystems, conservation areas, farms, and natural spaces that surround us on Vancouver Island. By collaborating with local experts and community organisations, they are able to move between the classroom and the field in ways that make abstract concepts concrete and inspire a sense of personal responsibility for the land they are learning on.
